Week 1 Afterword

by Big Al

I do enjoy a good first week of the season. So thank you, playoffs, you certainly gave me that.

Auburn 21 - Washington 16

I came away from this game thinking that Washington may very well be the better team here. Oh sure, they were the worse team in this game, but they were making a lot of stupid mistakes that kept them from getting ahead. It might just have been week-one jitters after crossing the country to play a huge game in front of a hostile crowd. A couple fewer mistakes and we'd all be talking about how the Pac-12 is back. One meaningless game at the start of the season did not affect Washington's playoff chances one iota. But it did remove pretty much all of their wiggle room if they want to return to the playoffs.

Notre Dame 24 - Michigan 17

Name one ____ thing that went right for Michigan. Seriously. They made some stupid mistakes, sure, but even when they did things right, they still went wrong. I wouldn't read too much into this turkey, they hung in there in a game where they couldn't do anything right. They aren't a lost cause yet.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, shouldn't get cocky. They jumped out to an early lead, then immediately did nothing with it. After their first few possesions, they couldn't score a point on Michigan. They looked good, but they have a lot of work to do to. Particularly in the passing game.

Michigan State 38 - Utah State 31

Not the score Michigan State was hoping for, but a win is a win. Don't complain about them. Maybe a 7-point win over a team they expected to dominiate will wake up the players and hone them in on what they need to do every week.

Penn State 45 - Appalachian State 38

See above. Replace "Michigan" with "Penn".

West Virginia 40 - Tennessee 14

Well color me corrected. West Virginia stuck it to Tennessee like the Mountaineers slipped moonshine into the Volunteers' Gatorade. Tennessee, where have you gone? West Virginia, welcome back!

Maryland 34 - Texas 29

You've got to be _____ kidding me.

You know what, Texas came into this game looking to right a wrong from last year and they fell on their faces. Maryland came into the game with something to prove and they proved it. Now if they can keep their starting quarterback healthy for more than a game or two, they might be worth watching in the Big Ten.

I wish I could have watched some of this game just to see what was going on. Was Maryland that good, or is Texas still bad? I suppose we'll find out more next week.

LSU 33 - Miami 17

I see that Miami picked up right where they left off from last year. LSU, meanwhile, didn't exactly wow me, but they are certainly no slouches.

I would like to point out that, had the game not been as close at the end and if I were Joe Burrow, I would have thrown a ball right to one of the Miami DBs with less than a minute left... just to see what they did with the chain. I'd say that might get a rivalry started, but I think Miami already has more of those than they know what to do with.

Virginia Tech 24 - Florida State 3

Watching this game, Florida State clearly had talent. But watching this game, they looked like they didn't know which way they were going. Once their defense settled in, they kept Virginia Tech largely under control. But their offense never really figured out where they were going.

Virginia Tech, meanwhile, looked like a team that has been there, done that, and knew what they wanted to do and how they wanted to do it. Florida State frequently looked stupid. But Virginia Tech was also frequently making them look stupid with good football.

Florida State will get better by the end of the year. They are a team with a new coach and a new scheme.

Virginia Tech just checked off a big To Do off of their list and set themselves up nicely for the rest of the year. They have a tough way to go, but it's nice to get one big item off the list.

Playoff Recap and Championship Preview

The boring year continues.

Bowl Preview 2

The bowl picks keep rolling in! Here are the rest of them.

Bowl Preview 1

Bowl games! You know, those games where teams get to go play a sport for fun. Doesn't really fit in with the modern sensibilities, I know. Anyway, here's the first batch of games.

Week 14 Recap

A fundamentally boring week of conference championships. Explain that to me.

Week 14 Preview

Championship weekend. I'm still not a fan: too many opportunities for teams to drop games that can mess up their seasons.

Week 13 Recap

Rivarly week didn't provide too many surprises, but there were enough that's the week is worth talking about.

Week 13 Preview

It's rivalry week! But it's an amazingly uninteresting rivalry week. I seriously can't believe how uninteresting this weekend is. It's rivalry week, and the games aren't interesting. What the heck?
