Week 12 Recap

by Big Al

Holy heck, that was one crazy week. And it had some major results for the rest of the year.

South Carolina 63 - Tennessee 38

When you score so many touchdowns that you run out of fireworks to shoot off after a score, you know you did something right. And when you do it against the #6 team in the country, you are doing something very, very right.

Spencer Rattler was truly amazing all game, and Tennessee looked lost on defense. It's not like Tennessee's offense played poorly: they managed 38 points, which should have been enough to beat an unranked team. But South Carolina was absolutely unstoppable and ran Tennessee right out of the building. Great win by South Carolina!

On the other hand, Tennessee lost the game, their chance at the playoffs, and Hendon Hooker. They were in the playoffs. They were absolutely in. All they had to do was knock off two unranked teams to wrap up a trip to the big show. One-loss Tennessee gets in over one-loss Ohio State or Michigan. But I'm guessing that they were already planning what they were going to do when they got to their bowl-game hotels. Now that's all gone, and now they lost their offensive leader in the bargain. I don't know if this was the worst game in Tennessee footbal history, but it definitely makes the top 5.

Michigan 19 - Illinois 17
TCU 29 - Baylor 28
Ohio State 43 - Maryland 30

It's games like this game made me think it was going to be a quiet weekend. Yes, all these team were taken to the wire, but they all figured out how to win. That happens to even truly great teams. They make the plays they need to make when they need to make them. And the net result is zero impact on the teams and their postseason plans.

USC 48 - UCLA 45

Well, it wasn't easy, but USC got it gone. The Pac-12 still has a horse in the race. Lincoln Riley's turnaround this year has been truly remarkable.

All the same, USC has to get through a suddenly impressive Notre Dame and the Pac-12 championship game if they are going to make the playoffs. That's asking a lot for any team to run this end-of-year gauntlet.

Georgia 16 - Kentucky 6

Georgia only needs one more win and they are in. This game wasn't a statement, but it was every bit of good enough. If they can knock off Georgia Tech, they can lose to LSU in the SEC Championship, and they are still making the playoffs. The first part of that is suddenly rather questionable, because...

Georgia Tech 21 - North Carolina 17

If North Carolina had gone into the ACC champiohship game with one loss, the ACC would have guaranteed a team in the playoffs. Now they have to root for Clemson. I don't know where this came from, but nice win by Georgia Tech!

Clemson 40 - Miami 10

Admittedly, if Clemson can keep getting better like this, then they are in good shape. Holding any team to less than 100 yards of offense is impressive, no matter what team it is. And I have to say that I'm impressed that Miami was able to score 10 points despite that statistic. Clemson may not be the best team in the country, but if they can win out, they are definitely playoff material.

Oregon 20 - Utah 17

I am glad to see that Patrick Nix is back from injury. That means they are still in the hunt for the Pac-12 championship. It won't be easy, but they are in the pole position after grinding out this win.

Arkansas 42 - Ole Miss 27

Well, I didn't see that coming. Clearly, neither did Ole Miss.

Navy 17 - UCF 14

For most teams, winning a game without completing a pass is something your fans talk about for the rest of their lives. For Navy, having an incompletion on their only pass of the day on their way to a win is pretty much, "Whatever." But a win over a ranked team, now that's not something Navy gets every year. Great job, Midshipmen!

Vanderbilt 31 - Florida 24

Wait, what? Vanderbilt did what? Huh. Great win Commodores!

Iowa 13 - Minnesota 10

Iowa wins Floyd of Rosedale! And does it by scoring 13 points. Which is pretty much par for the course in Iowa this year.

Indiana 39 - Michigan State 31 (2OT)

Indiana won the Old Brass Spittoon is epic fashion, with a comeback from 17 points down (twice) and a scoreless first overtime. That must have been one gut-wrenching game for both teams, and I feel sorry for Michigan State to also get a kick in that same gut with the loss. But congratulations to Indiana on a great win!
