Week 3 Post

by Big Al

Well, that was interesting. So was my week, which is why I'm catching up on my recap on Friday.

Texas 24 - Ohio State 23

Well, it was the same old story for Ohio State: taking the ball to the red zone early and coming away with field goals or no points. Needing a sustained drive on offense late and not getting it. Needing to get a stop late and not getting it. Needing a field goal late and not getting it. Needing to get the ball down the field to get a chance to win and not getting it. It's been the same in three straight losses for the Buckeyes, and that's a problem.

But let's not overlook one simple fact: Texas is a lot better than Ohio State. Because Texas played like absolute crap for 2 and 1/2 quarters and still had no trouble pulling out the win. Once they started NOT making tons of mistakes, Ohio State had no answer. So, yes, the better team absolutely won this game.

Michigan 17 - Oklahoma 10

I've always made a point of at least trying not to call out and criticize college kids on this site. They're kids in their late teens and very early 20s, so I'd just as soon not pile on these kids. With that said, it is the age of NIL. And at theses prices, they can suck it up and deal.

John Mateer is a bad passer. He's a good quarterback, but he can't throw the ball for crap. Michigan kept Oklahoma's running game bottled up and Oklahoma needed to throw their way out of it. With a few exceptions, Mateer was not up to the job. Not that Michigan was burning up the stat sheet (both Mateer and Underwood were half of a completion above 50%), but they at least seem to know what they are. Either way, these were two evenly matched teams with one touchdown after an interception separating on this particular Saturday. As to whether both teams should be proud of or embarassed by this will be made plain over the next month or so.

Oklahoma State 39 - Oregon 31

This result was absolutely shocking. How did Oregon manage to keep it within eight?

Seriously, what was this? Oregon looked lost out there. Did these two teams switch uniforms or something? Every time I switched to this game, Oklahoma State was gutting Oregon's defense for a huge gain, or humiliating their defense with an easy touchdown. And their offense looked like they hadn't practiced their plays at all. I mean, seriously, I don't know what that was. Can Oregon recover? I really have no idea. Can Oklahoma State capitalize on this win? Honestly, considering they lost to Tulsa, probably not.

Also, I don't get the thing with Dante Moore. I've seen him play and he's okay. Even adequate. But I don't see a top quarterback. I just see a good player who happens to be on a very good offense. Maybe I'm missing something (especially for the pro scouts) but I don't see a guy who I would pick to take my team to a conference championship, much less a national championship. He's okay. He's got three months to prove me wrong.

Texas A&M 48 - Arizona State 20

Arizona State made a run at it, but Texas A&M held up and put it away. So A&M keeps it alive another week.

LSU 45 - Louisiana Tech 14

What was it... 3 straight drives that Sam Leavitt threw an interception? That's not a good sign.

Iowa 16 - Iowa State 13

Hey, it was a rivaly win. Don't knock it.

Washington 16 - Utah State 14

This, however, was just embarassing. But it was a win, so don't complain.
